A gathering known as Rededicate 250 took place on the National Mall, marking the United States’ 250th anniversary. It featured conservative Christian elements, including praise songs, prayers, and speeches. Attendees worshiped with Christian music. The event highlighted America’s history and expressed thanks for divine providence, organized by Freedom 250 in collaboration with the White House.
Nineteen faith leaders participated, with 18 being Christian and predominantly evangelical. Notable speakers included White House senior adviser Paula White-Cain, Rev. Franklin Graham, and Bishop Robert Barron. Rabbi Meir Soloveichik represented non-Christian faiths as the sole Jewish leader present.
President Trump was absent but shared a video message quoting 2 Chronicles 7:11-22, a biblical scripture. Other Trump administration members also delivered video messages. Congressional figures such as Republican Senator Tim Scott participated, while House Speaker Mike Johnson led a prayer emphasizing divine origin of rights.
Christian musician Chris Tomlin performed at the gathering. Criticism arose labeling the event as promoting Christian nationalism, claiming it blurred church-state separation lines. Interfaith Alliance projected messages supporting religious freedom onto the National Gallery of Art, voicing opposition.
Rachel Laser, Americans United for Separation of Church and State President, critiqued the event’s focus on Christian nationalism, arguing it undermined religious freedom. The organization’s financial support to NPR was noted. Contributions to the report were made by Kathryn Post and Yonat Shimron.
