Kelsey Grammer Reflects on ‘Frasier’ and Its Success

Kelsey Grammer has revealed the unexpected twist that made ‘Frasier’ a hit sitcom. During an appearance on ‘Planet Tyrus,’ the actor disclosed he was close to starring in a different show after ‘Cheers.’ A key conversation, however, changed the course of events.

Grammer played the character of psychiatrist Dr. Frasier Crane for nine seasons on ‘Cheers,’ transitioning from a love interest to a memorable regular. Following ‘Cheers,’ NBC’s ‘Frasier’ featured Grammer in the leading role for 11 seasons, from 1993 to 2004.

‘I had been considered for another show,’ Grammer noted. ‘The offer came after ‘Cheers,’ and they believed I could lead my own show. We initially worked on a different story, and a script was even written.’

Grammer recounted a dinner with John Pike, president of Paramount, where Pike remarked, ‘I think a sitcom should be funny. This script doesn’t work. You should play Frasier.’

Following that advice, Grammer embraced the role. He noted, ‘I agreed to play Frasier, realizing the character had comedic potential. No marriage, no kids, except occasional appearances by his son, Frederick.’

Relocating Frasier from Boston to Seattle distinguished the spinoff from ‘Cheers,’ explaining the son’s absent presence while avoiding the perception of Frasier as a ‘deadbeat dad.’

‘Frasier’ debuted on September 16, 1993, concluding on May 13, 2004. Winning 37 Primetime Emmy Awards, the series finale attracted 25.2 million viewers.

In 2023, Grammer returned to his iconic role in the ‘Frasier’ revival on Paramount+. The revival lasted for two seasons. Notably absent was John Mahoney, who played Martin Crane and passed away in 2018 at 77. Grammer spoke fondly of Mahoney, recalling his fear of Eddie the dog despite their on-screen rapport.

Reflecting on life and his career, Grammer said, ‘I am always inspired by life and the experiences it offers. I cherish encounters with people worldwide, especially in bars, which are among my most favorite places.’ He shared his enthusiasm for the future, driven by the unpredictability and excitement of life’s experiences.
