Sanjaynagar Redevelopment Brings Hope and Change
Pooja Gawali and her family once lived in a compact tin shack. Now, they reside in a newly constructed apartment. Gawali sees their move as a change, with privacy and space to pursue hobbies, like sewing.
The construction project, acknowledged for its unique approach, won an award for innovation. Viraj Nayar for NPR provided insight into this transformative initiative.
From Tin Shack to Modern Living
The family’s former home lacked indoor plumbing, comprised tin walls, and a leaky roof. Gawali, her husband, in-laws, and two brothers-in-law shared the cramped space. Privacy was rare, as cautions about sitting or behaving were constant, a common situation in Sanjaynagar, a densely populated slum in Maharashtra, India.
In 2022, Gawali’s life altered when she moved to a second-floor apartment in a three-story building occupied by families from her former neighborhood. A connected staircase links her apartment with those of her brothers-in-law.
“I relish the privacy I have now,” she says. “It’s a joy to be able to live freely. We’re still a tight-knit family, but life is so much easier when everyone has their own space.”
A Dream Fulfilled
Named Swapnapurti, meaning “a dream fulfilled,” each unit includes a living room, bedroom, kitchen, running water bathroom, and a balcony. The courtyard blooms with green plants and benches, and bamboo screens offer natural shade and ventilation.
The building stays cooler; architects used insulating materials like brick made of sand and ash.
Innovative Housing Initiative
The Sanjaynagar Redevelopment Project is a revitalization effort combining local government, charities, nonprofits, and community funding. Families contribute 10% of construction costs. Funding comes partially from loans through Rang De, a peer-to-peer lending platform. Government schemes and international donors like Currystone Foundation fund the rest.
Winning the World Habitat Awards Silver for sustainability has shown the project’s potential. UN-Habitat expert Francesca Lionetti recognizes its community-led approach and attention to communal areas.
Design and Community
Community Design Agency architect Sandhya Janardhan highlights the focus on communal ties. The project’s center is a courtyard for play and events, with wide corridors for light and air.
The Path to Redevelopment
Snehalaya, a local nonprofit, played a crucial role. They built trust by offering services like education centers and health awareness in the community, which helped a smooth transition into temporary accommodation. Their presence meant families trusted the new development plans.
Director Hanif Shaik recalls early ideas during a community tour with Janardhan. They recognized how poor living conditions fueled social issues like addiction and envisioned change through redesign.
Engagement and Cooperation
The local government’s support with land and utilities was foundational. Materials for temporary housing were provided. Younger residents facilitated communication and paperwork, fostering understanding and engagement.
Community representative Anjali Naydu led meetings to support the proposal. She persuades residents of the benefits, revealing they could choose their living spaces and neighbors, ensuring retained social bonds.
Elected slum committees and housing cooperatives ensure community representation and governance.
Success Stories and Hope
Widow Savitha Yadava returned after her husband’s death left her unable to afford the slum. Her Sanjaynagar return has improved her family’s life, providing a solid home and better opportunities for her children.
Early resident transitions and improvements inspire hope. Government policy changes could cause delays, but Janardhan expects progress to be more cost-effective in the future.
Pooja Suryavanshi voices her dreams for her son’s future: “I dream of the day he will grow up in a home with sturdy walls that keep out the wind and rain.”
