Nonprofits Tackle Storm Damage in Northwest Indiana

Northwest Indiana recently faced severe summer storms, causing challenges for local nonprofits like the Humane Indiana Wildlife and Haven House. These organizations dealt with power outages, fallen trees, and property damage.

Impact on Humane Indiana Wildlife

The Humane Indiana Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center in Valparaiso initially escaped damage during the two rounds of storms. However, the last wave of rain and wind hit the property hard. Senior Director Nicole Harmon detailed that approximately 18 trees fell, and two enclosure spaces suffered damage.

The center, situated on 28 acres, has around four built-up acres with enclosures and office spaces. The facility houses 18 enclosures for animals nearing release stages. During the storm, staff were present on-site to check on the animals: 110 in outdoor spaces and 400 inside shelters. Thankfully, no injuries or significant damage to enclosures were reported.

Nevertheless, two enclosures were affected, although they contained no animals at the time. Power was lost at 4:30 p.m. Monday and restored by 2 a.m. Wednesday. Staff managed through the outage using headlamps and by transporting incubator-rehabilitating animals to their homes. A community-supplied generator maintained freezer and refrigerator function throughout.

Despite operational inconveniences, spirits remained high. The center remained active, providing care to animals and utilizing social media to update the public.

Challenges at Haven House

Domestic violence shelter Haven House continues to address issues from previous storms. A tree fell into one of the shelter’s bedrooms in late June. The forthcoming contractor assessment will determine the shelter’s viability after further damage from subsequent rains.

Jennifer Winker, Haven House Board President, stated that despite uncertainties about the building’s future, operations continue. Families are accommodated in temporary shelters, and efforts to assist clients persist. The shelter appreciates ongoing donations and remains in contact with the community through social media and its website.
