Record-Breaking Temperatures Across the West
This weekend, a severe heat wave will affect parts of the Western U.S., potentially reaching record temperatures. The National Weather Service warns of significant heat from Arizona to Montana due to a high-pressure ridge trapping heat near the ground, known as a heat dome.
Meteorologists expect this heat wave to be brief but intense. Las Vegas might hit 115°F, its highest temperature this year, with Phoenix and El Centro, California, reaching 116°F and 118°F, respectively. In Great Falls, Montana, temperatures could rise to 104°F, surpassing previous records.
Morgan Stessman, a weather service meteorologist, indicated that Las Vegas could see a temperature 10 degrees above normal this Saturday. Overnight lows in the 80s and 90s exacerbate the risk, as there is no opportunity for the body to recover from the heat. Residents are advised to stay inside and remain hydrated.
The August record for Las Vegas remains at 116°F, while the highest ever recorded was 120°F in July 2024, during the hottest summer on record.
Montana and Heat Warnings
Meteorologist Jeff Kitsmiller described an extreme heat warning for Montana’s eastern side, where Great Falls might break its previous record. Although this heat wave is not as severe as the mid-July one, which saw places like Billings reach 111°F, it aligns with seasonal expectations.
Forecasts suggest relief on Sunday, with state temperatures dropping to the 70s.
Increased Wildfire Risks
The combined effects of this heat wave and existing dry conditions raise wildfire risks across the Western U.S. In Montana, there are current fires and high winds forecasted for the weekend, prompting red flag warnings.
In Nevada, the heat dome has decreased moisture, with relative humidity plummeting to single digits in the afternoons. Much of Southern California, excluding coastal areas, faces enhanced wildfire risks according to the U.S. Forest Service.
Climate Change and El Nino Impact
The frequency and intensity of heat waves and wildfires have increased due to climate change from burning fossil fuels. This results in longer droughts and larger wildfires.
In addition, El Nino, a natural Pacific Ocean phenomenon, is expected to influence weather patterns this year. Experts point out this El Nino might be among the most intense since tracking began in 1950, with early stages already setting intensity records, according to United Nations officials.
