Controversy Over Lincoln Memorial Pool Damage

President Donald Trump has criticized U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro’s claim regarding the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool’s damage. Pirro suggested construction issues led to the damage, contradicting Trump’s vandalism claim.

On Friday, Pirro’s office filed to dismiss charges against David Hearn, a former Olympian. Hearn was accused of intentional damage following the pool’s renovation for the nation’s 250th birthday.

Trump acknowledged potential contractor difficulties but insisted, without new evidence, that vandals caused major damage. His social media post expressed disagreement with Pirro, highlighting an embarrassing challenge for the Justice Department.

Government lawyers presented a court filing stating interior department documents indicated the damage was due to rushed contractor work. A visual inspection also showed damage in areas unlikely to be vandalized.

New information made linking the widespread damage to vandalism challenging, noted Pirro, who sought case dismissal against Hearn. A video posted by Trump showed people interacting with the pool, though no clear vandalism was evident. Workers nearby seemed unaware of any wrongdoing.

In May, Trump announced plans to beautify the Reflecting Pool and directed a new liner painted “American flag blue.” Shortly after completion, the liner began peeling, which Trump attributed to vandalism.

The National Park Service reported a June incident involving a sharp object cutting the liner. The Reflecting Pool project is among several initiatives Trump has pursued, including demolishing the White House’s East Wing for a ballroom and planning an arch between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.
