Democrats Eye Ohio Seat as Republican Faces Abuse Allegations
Democrats see a new opportunity to gain control of a U.S. House seat in Northeast Ohio amid allegations of domestic abuse against incumbent Republican Max Miller. This seat became interesting for Democrats as media focus increased on Miller’s legal disputes with his ex-wife.
The accusations against Miller, a former White House adviser during President Donald Trump’s first term, have drawn attention during a heated legal battle with his ex-wife, Emily Moreno. She is the daughter of Republican Senator Bernie Moreno. Despite winning the district with just over 51% of the vote two years ago, Miller’s position appears vulnerable due to these issues.
Democratic leaders have called for Miller to resign. They’ve also requested a congressional ethics investigation and hinted at directing more support to his Democratic opponent, Brian Poindexter, a union ironworker. While Miller has denied the abuse allegations and filed defamation lawsuits against his ex-wife and another accuser, the challenges persist.
The House Majority PAC, which aims to elect a Democratic majority, is keeping an eye on this race as part of its effort to penetrate GOP territory. Spokesperson CJ Warnke expressed their willingness to explore all options to win back the House.
Republican Support for Miller
Despite the allegations, Republicans continue to back Miller, citing his contributions to the district and his potential electability in November. However, the complications surrounding Miller are not unnoticed by Trump’s advisors, who are monitoring the situation.
As the deadline for replacing Miller on the ballot approached, no Republican had publicly suggested taking this step. Republican Governor Mike DeWine acknowledged the severity of the allegations but said voters should decide Miller’s fate.
Republicans are working to defend their narrow majority in the U.S. House during the November races. Ohio-based Republican consultant Terry Casey noted that Miller remains favored to win this Republican-leaning district, which Trump won decisively two years ago. However, significant financial backing could boost Poindexter’s visibility in the district’s media markets.
Democratic Demands for Investigation
In the ongoing dispute, Emily Moreno claims Miller scalded, hit, and threatened her during their marriage. A recent magazine article highlighted Moreno contacting authorities over their daughter’s broken collarbone, adding another layer to the legal battle.
Democratic Representative Shontel Brown suggested Miller should step down, while the House Democratic Women’s Caucus called for an ethics investigation, emphasizing the seriousness of violence allegations.
Senator Bernie Moreno declined to comment on the allegations involving Miller and his daughter but insisted on prioritizing his family’s safety.
Miller’s Legal Disputes
Miller has fiercely denied all accusations and did not respond to requests for comment. Earlier, he provided documentation showing some allegations against him were deemed unsubstantiated. He has filed a defamation suit against Emily Moreno.
Their dispute escalated as Moreno’s lawyers sought a restraining order against Miller for alleged aggressive actions towards her attorney. Miller’s lawyer reportedly described him as unable to control himself.
In another development, Miller’s ex-girlfriend Stephanie Grisham filed a lawsuit claiming Miller violated a confidential settlement from their previous legal battle.
Campaign Challenges for Miller
The allegations against Miller present an opportunity for Poindexter to upset the Republican hold in November if enough conservative voters are swayed. Poindexter calls for law enforcement to focus on the allegations and suggests serious consequences if they are proven true.
Former Ohio lawmaker Jim Trakas mentioned the difficulty for incumbents amid such controversies, diverting attention from core issues like the economy.
