Human Remains Identified as Missing Woman After More Than Four Decades

Authorities in Florida have identified human remains found by a kayaker as those of Rose Marie Gayhart, a woman who disappeared over 40 years ago. She was reported missing in March 1985 by her parents in Dansville, New York.

Background on Rose Marie Gayhart’s Disappearance

Prior to her disappearance, Gayhart was living and working in the Cape Coral and North Fort Myers area. She had been living with her boyfriend, Robert Paddock, and his mother. Although she had moved to the area only three months prior, her regular letters and phone calls home abruptly ended, causing her family to suspect something was wrong.

Witness interviews revealed that Gayhart was last seen walking with a suitcase after being asked to leave the trailer where she lived. A neighbor reported Gayhart had used her phone to call her family and had disclosed she was pregnant. Her relationship with Paddock was reportedly troubled, with one neighbor recounting hearing loud arguing and the destruction of belongings.

Gayhart worked at a local restaurant named Howie’s Hot Dogs. She was last seen leaving with a man in a red pickup truck, which is considered an important lead in the case.

Discovery and DNA Identification

In May 2024, a kayaker discovered a human skull in a Cape Coral canal, prompting police involvement. DNA obtained from Gayhart’s family confirmed her identity after two years of testing, providing closure to aspects of her disappearance but reopening the case as an active homicide investigation.

“For more than 40 years, Rose Marie Gayhart’s family has carried the weight of not knowing what happened to her,” Cape Coral Police Chief Anthony Sizemore said. “While this identification brings long-awaited answers, it also strengthens our resolve.”

The Cape Coral Police Department urges anyone with information related to Gayhart’s disappearance to come forward.
