Remembering Grace and Continuing Her Legacy
On October 7, 2024, our lives changed forever. My husband Eric and I awoke feeling exhausted after a long weekend. As always, Eric went to wake our two youngest daughters, Grace and Jill. They were the only children left at home since our older kids, Isabelle, Alex, and Olivia, had moved out. While Eric went about his usual routine, I stayed in bed, listening to the familiar sounds of our morning.
Eric knocked on Grace’s door, calling her with the nickname ‘Gracetopher.’ When there was no response, he remembered Grace had chosen to sleep in Olivia’s room, missing her sibling who was away at college. After getting no answer, Eric opened the door and was stunned by what he found. He called out for me, saying words that seemed too surreal to understand: ‘Kate, she’s dead. Oh my God, Grace is dead.’
Rushing down the hall, I found Eric by Grace’s side. She appeared to be asleep, yet something was terribly wrong. Eric was on the phone with 911, following instructions for CPR. Though we hoped against hope, from the moment we saw her, we sensed Grace was gone. Paramedics arrived, but their efforts were in vain. Our precious 17-year-old daughter had passed away.
In those first painful hours, Eric and I took turns sitting with Grace, whispering loving goodbyes. We wanted to make sure we properly said farewell. At the same time, our thoughts turned to our three older children. Olivia, 19, was at college. Alex, 20, lived three hours away. Isabelle, 25, lived two hours from us. Eric drove to gather them, while I stayed home with Jill, trying to comprehend what had happened.
Grace had been under the care of a pediatric cardiologist because of syncope and tachycardia. Her death was attributed to cardiac arrhythmia, likely due to an electrical issue in her heart. In the days that followed, we were overwhelmed with sorrow and confusion. We had to plan a wake and funeral, a task impossible to reconcile with our grief. Somehow, we also had to distill Grace’s vibrant life into a brief obituary.
The day we laid Grace to rest was the same day we were supposed to tour Michigan State University together. Our loss was incessantly punctuated by the life she should have been living. Each moment was an agonizing reminder of what might have been.
Each family member bears grief differently. For Eric and me, it affects us emotionally, mentally, and physically. We navigate it one day at a time, sometimes one moment at a time. We had to determine who we are now, parents of five, with one lost. We debated whether to stay in our home, a place laden with memories. Eventually, we chose to move to Sugar Island, searching for a way to live while carrying Grace’s memory with us.
Grace’s death meant the loss of her future too. We had invested years in her, cherishing each step of her growth. Her absence leaves a void where her potential once was. In her memory, we continue to parent her in our own way, including creating the ‘Gracie Goes Everywhere’ book series. These stories allow a character inspired by Grace to explore life’s adventures, ensuring her spirit persists in our hearts and minds.
To other parents, I stress the importance of listening to your children. Allow them the space and voice to shape your family’s life. Grace was not just a girl who passed unexpectedly; she was funny and intelligent. Her impact endures despite her untimely departure.
