Tom Selleck nearly declined one of his most iconic roles. In a recent podcast with Ted Danson, Selleck shared how actor James Garner influenced his decision to accept the role in “Magnum, P.I.”
Selleck recounted a conversation with Garner, revealing his uncertainty due to contractual obligations. The initial script did not impress him. “The show, incidentally, was called ‘Magnum’ and I hated it. It was terrible,” Selleck recalled.
The character, written by Glen A. Larson, seemed flawless and uninteresting to Selleck. Garner advised, “You’ll never have more power than you do right now,” encouraging Selleck to push for changes.
Selleck wanted Thomas Magnum to have depth. He drew inspiration from Garner’s Jim Rockford on “The Rockford Files.” In 2015, Selleck described the original character as “very James Bond-like” but preferred a more relatable, fallible hero.
Selleck’s persistence led to a change in direction. Donald P. Bellisario, “Magnum, P.I.” co-creator, rewrote the script to offer the depth Selleck sought. Selleck’s gamble paid off, as he fondly remembered telling Charlie Rose in 1997 about the risk of appearing difficult in Hollywood.
Selleck said, “I would have gotten a pretty good reputation for being difficult and never worked again.”
Despite a successful series like “The Sacketts,” Selleck feared his limited success in previous pilots. He overcame the studio’s concerns over the title’s similarity to “Magnum Force” and embraced “Magnum, P.I.” though he preferred calling it simply “Magnum.”
Reflecting on his career decision, Selleck noted, “I’m not sure my dad ever said, ‘Risk is the price you pay for opportunity,’ but he lived his life that way.”
Selleck’s story is a testament to resilience and the importance of advocating for creative vision.
