Stephen Baldwin Chooses Faith Over Hollywood Stardom

Stephen Baldwin, known for his role in the Oscar-winning film “The Usual Suspects,” reflected on his career and the life-altering decision to prioritize faith over fame. Baldwin, now 60, believes he could have been a major Hollywood star, but he chose a different path.

“I probably could have pointed myself in the direction of becoming a big star,” Baldwin shared with People. “But that wasn’t me. I didn’t want to be Tom Cruise, and have to make $100 million at the box office. I’d rather be a schmuck from Massapequa.”

The actor’s priorities changed significantly after he embraced born-again Christianity in 2001. His journey began when a Brazilian housekeeper, employed by Baldwin and his wife Kennya, claimed she was sent by God. She predicted they would become Christians and start a ministry.

Baldwin admitted initial skepticism but was influenced by his sister’s commitment to Christianity and the unique blend of extreme sports and worship he encountered at evangelical events. “Down on the beach, they had built a skate park on the sand with plywood. And these funky, super committed, cool, tattooed, pierced skateboarders were there and they’d skate, stop, pick up a microphone and start preaching evangelistically, and like 5,000 kids would be around watching because of their interest in the skateboarders,” he described. This experience led him to produce a Christian-themed skate video titled “Livin’ It.”

“In the first six months we’d distributed 10,000 copies,” Baldwin recounted. Eventually, larger churches expressed interest, requesting the skaters for live events. For the next four years, he visited 125 churches, dedicating himself to his faith.

The actor acknowledges Hollywood’s discomfort with his outspoken religious and political views, particularly his support for President Donald Trump in 2016 and 2024. “I think they thought I act a little too weird,” he noted. Despite this, Baldwin remains content, appreciating the positive responses he receives from those touched by his work.

Currently, Baldwin is focused on producing faith-based films for young audiences and hosts a podcast titled “One Bad Movie,” where actors share their worst film experiences. As a grandfather, Baldwin’s outlook continues to strengthen, attributing his stability to his faith and family.

“I’ve done 100 movies, I’ve made more money than I could have wildly imagined, and I’m married to the hottest chick I’ve ever seen in my life,” he stated. “Jesus is my rock. My wife is my anchor.”
