Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Critiques COVID Coverage on CNN

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. criticized CNN anchor Dana Bash for her role in media coverage during the COVID-19 pandemic. During an appearance on ‘State of the Union,’ Kennedy accused Bash of failing to challenge public health authorities and contributed to marginalizing dissenting voices.

Kennedy stated, ‘You were part of the problem. There was absolute press malpractice. Your job is a fierce skepticism toward authority, and you weren’t doing that.’ He believed Bash focused on pressuring dissenters rather than skeptically examining official narratives.

Bash attempted to steer the conversation toward future pandemic preparedness, emphasizing the need to avoid past mistakes. Despite acknowledging errors made by officials during the pandemic, she defended the effectiveness of the COVID vaccine, highlighting that data shows it prevented deaths.

A 2023 study by CDC and Harvard researchers estimated primary vaccination might have prevented at least 232,000 deaths among unvaccinated U.S. adults.

Kennedy countered that CNN contributed to public alarm with its coverage, which he believed added to fear. When asked why he felt CNN had frightened the public, he pointed to the network’s pandemic chyrons as evidence.

Bash explained that CNN reported on information from government officials, including daily briefings from President Trump, saying, ‘We were listening to the leaders in this country.’

Kennedy further accused Bash and the network of punishing those who questioned health guidelines or figures like Anthony Fauci. He claimed Fauci lied about several aspects of the pandemic, including mask efficacy and COVID-19 origins.

The interview coincided with Fauci invoking the Fifth Amendment multiple times in a Senate hearing on the pandemic response. Sen. Rand Paul indicated there would be a contempt resolution vote regarding the hearing.

Bash also addressed the concerning rise in measles cases, urging Kennedy to advise parents to vaccinate their children. Kennedy supported the MMR vaccine, stating, ‘Measles vaccine is effective. It stops measles in about 97% of the cases. People should get vaccinated.’

Bash emphasized the importance of identifying and explaining false information in news reporting, rather than simply presenting opposing views.
