The Los Angeles Dodgers recently secured a significant trade, acquiring pitcher Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers. President of baseball operations Andrew Friedman shared optimistic updates with manager Dave Roberts before their game against the Red Sox.
Roberts mentioned receiving positive news about the trade’s progress. However, finalization depended on medical checks. Friedman was cautious until receiving confirmation from the Tigers.
I wasn’t getting too high or too low on it until we actually found out,he said.
On Saturday, the Dodgers traded three prospects to the Tigers. In return, they gained Skubal, known for his exceptional pitching skills. The teams publicly announced the trade on Sunday.
Friedman indicated the Dodgers’ intention was not to engage in a major trade deadline deal. However, many saw acquiring Skubal as likely.
Active Trade Discussions
The trade discussions intensified Friday and Saturday. Friedman and the team aimed to finalize a deal swiftly.
We were of the mind to be aggressive for one player this deadline,Friedman stated.
The trade’s timing and the talent exchanged surprised some in the industry. The Dodgers integrated Skubal without affecting their current major-league roster. Although Ryan had made four major-league starts in 2024, health issues had stalled further appearances.
Friedman acknowledged giving up talented prospects for Skubal. He noted the team’s current core and timing influenced their decision.
Bolstering the Rotation
With Skubal joining, the Dodgers’ postseason pitching rotation includes notable names like Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Shohei Ohtani. Dalton Rushing, the team’s catcher, remarked on the rotation’s strength, potentially among the best historically.
Veteran Miguel Rojas commented on the team’s dedication to maintaining high standards. However, health remains a consideration. Skubal and Blake Snell had surgeries for elbow issues, with both showing progress. Tyler Glasnow is nearing a return following back spasms, while Ohtani faces ongoing knee challenges.
Friedman expressed confidence in Ohtani’s recovery. The plan remains to build him up methodically, with or without the trade.
Future Prospects
Skubal is scheduled to debut against the Cubs in Chicago on Tuesday. The Dodgers may still explore additional trades. Despite potential roster enhancements, Friedman indicated no urgent needs, reducing the likelihood of further significant deals.
Fortunately, we don’t have that acute need that we have to do this or our team is in real danger,Friedman noted.
