In his words, “It was awful. It was probably one of the worst mounds I’ve had. It was dry; it was rock hard. I had the guys out there fix it three times, two times. And we got it back to being decent, but yeah, it was awful; it’s bad,” he stated. Despite his complaints, Misiorowski clarified that he did not blame his performance on the mound’s condition.

Despite the setback, Misiorowski had a strong performance, giving up only two runs on two hits in seven innings. He managed to strike out ten, with only one walk. The key mistake was a two-run homer by Wade Meckler in the second inning, which decided the game.

The mound controversy revived discussions about Angel Stadium’s aging infrastructure. Kikuchi had mentioned broken air conditioning in the weight room as an example of the stadium’s lacking amenities.

Walbert Ureña of the Angels, who played a crucial role in the shutout, did not join Misiorowski in criticizing the mound, leading some to think the comments were merely an excuse for a rare off day. On paper, the Brewers, leaders of the NL Central, seemed likely contenders against the Angels.
