Democrats Seek Changes Amidst Low Ratings for Ocasio-Cortez

A recent national poll indicates that a majority of Democrats wish for extensive changes within their party. However, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a well-known progressive leader, faces low favorability ratings, complicating her potential role as a unifying figure. The CNN/SSRS survey was conducted from July 23-27 and included 1,225 respondents, with a margin of error of +/-3.2 at the 95 percent confidence level.

Party Dynamics and Ocasio-Cortez’s Standing

The survey found that many Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents prefer significant changes in leadership and strategy. Meanwhile, Ocasio-Cortez holds a 26 percent national favorability rating, with 36 percent viewing her unfavorably. Among younger adults aged 18-34, her favorability is at 28 percent, slightly higher at 30 percent among those aged 35-49.

The findings present a strategic challenge for Democrats. While many voters are dissatisfied with current leadership, Ocasio-Cortez, despite her visibility, has not gained widespread national appeal. Although she has stated she is not running for president in 2028, she continues to be a leading voice within the progressive wing and is an influential fundraiser.

A Divided Electorate and Party Strategy

According to the survey, about one-third of Democrats identify as democratic socialists, highlighting the impact of progressive ideology. A large majority supports changing current leadership and the party’s strategy. However, Ocasio-Cortez’s favorability rating contrasts with those of other politicians with national recognition, who typically receive positive ratings between 40 and 50 percent.

Democratic Frontrunners for 2028

Potential candidates for the 2028 Democratic presidential race remain undecided, with no major announcements yet. Vice President Kamala Harris has hinted at the possibility of running. She has traveled to key states and expressed interest, stating in April she was considering it.

California Governor Gavin Newsom also opened up about the potential run in a June 2025 interview, stating it is a path he can envision. Meanwhile, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez spoke with David Axelrod, emphasizing her focus on countrywide changes rather than fantasizing about the presidency.

Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff has expressed no interest in the 2028 race, concentrating instead on his reelection in Georgia. His race is viewed as ‘Lean Democratic’ by the Cook Political Report.

As the next presidential election draws closer, Democratic strategists acknowledge the need to address the demand for structural reform while discovering leaders who can unify the party’s diverse base. This dual challenge comes at a pivotal time, highlighting the complex dynamics within the party.
