Sanctioned Tanker Raises Environmental Concerns Off Oman

A stranded tanker, filled with crude oil, is causing alarm as it leaves a trail of oil in protected waters near Oman. Satellite images reveal an oil sheen covering about 20 square kilometers around Dhofar’s Qibliyah Island, part of Oman’s Hallaniyat Islands. Oil patches have already reached the shoreline, raising fears of a more severe spill.

Current Situation

Wim Zwijnenburg, an environmental expert from Dutch peace organization PAX, noted the oil sheen is expanding. The rough monsoon season could worsen the situation, possibly causing the vessel to break apart. Recent imagery indicates increased oil leakage, strengthening concerns of a larger disaster.

The Caroline Bezengi tanker, flagged under Cameroon, has been stranded since June following an onboard explosion, maritime sources reported. The tanker ran into trouble near Mukalla, Yemen, on June 8, but the explosion’s cause is still unknown.

The ship reportedly loaded Russian crude at the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk before embarking on its troubled journey. This vessel is part of a so-called “shadow fleet,” designed to avoid these sanctions.

Ecological Threats

The spill endangers a marine reserve home to rare wildlife. Greenpeace Germany highlighted the risk to the area’s fragile ecosystem, urging immediate action to prevent further damage. The organization explained that oil has already polluted some coastline areas, leading to ecological harm.

The U.N.’s International Maritime Organization continues to monitor the event, stating that while the vessel hasn’t yet broken apart, the situation remains precarious. Omani authorities have set a deadline for the vehicle’s removal, but the compliance status is unclear.
