AI Experiment Faces Criticism at Richard Wagner Festival

In Bayreuth, an artificial intelligence project at the annual Richard Wagner festival received negative reactions. Audience members expressed their disapproval following the staging of “Götterdämmerung” on Saturday evening. This experiment involved using AI to generate visual images on stage, leading to confusion among the spectators.

As the performance concluded, curator Marcus Lobbes and his team met with boos and whistles. In contrast, the singers and musicians, especially conductor Christian Thielemann, received enthusiastic applause.

The organizers highlighted that AI would participate for the first time at the event, acting as an image-generating element. The intent was for the performers to remain the central focus amid dynamic projections. These visuals included a blend of Wagner’s “Ring” cycle scenes and historical themes, curated by Lobbes and his team.

The AI-assisted projections featured diverse images, such as former Chancellor Helmut Kohl, the World Trade Center after the 9/11 attacks, and a postage stamp celebrating German reunification in 1990. These elements created a collage that left viewers puzzled.

The festival’s website noted that each performance would offer a unique experience due to constantly changing images and associations. Two additional performances are planned.
