House Republicans Investigate New Jersey’s Voter Registration Issue

House Republicans are investigating the New Jersey government following Governor Mikie Sherrill’s admission that more than 6,000 noncitizens were mistakenly added to voter rolls for 2023 and 2024 elections.

The GOP has criticized New Jersey Democrats after Sherrill revealed that 6,600 noncitizens were added to the voter rolls due to an error before her term in office. This issue is drawing attention as election integrity becomes crucial ahead of the midterms.

Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan from Ohio and House Administration Committee Chairman Bryan Steil from Wisconsin have requested more information from New Jersey Lt. Governor Dale Caldwell regarding the state’s compliance with federal election laws.

“During a press conference on July 21, 2026, Governor Mikie Sherrill announced that approximately 6,600 noncitizens were registered to vote from June 2023 to June 2024 because the state Motor Vehicle Commission sent their data to the Department of State’s Division of Elections,” Jordan and Steil wrote.

Sherrill stated that around 400 of these noncitizens participated in elections since 2023 and attributed the mistake to a serious software error in New Jersey’s Motor Vehicle system.

It’s uncertain how many noncitizens have registered in the period following those two years, due to New Jersey motor voter laws facilitating the registration process during visits to DMV locations.

These developments challenge Democrats’ assurances that noncitizens aren’t voting in U.S. elections and support Republicans’ push for stricter federal election standards. Despite this, there is no evidence that noncitizen voting has affected federal election outcomes.

IDEMIA, the software vendor blamed by Sherrill, denies responsibility and points to New Jersey agencies as the cause. According to IDEMIA, the issue persisted until MVC requested setting changes in June 2024 but did not remove registered noncitizens from the rolls.

The Republicans’ letter argues that if New Jersey knew of the noncitizen registrations in June 2024, questions arise about Sherrill’s decision to delay addressing the issue and to blame IDEMIA.

Caldwell, as the state’s chief election official, is expected to assist with the investigation. The committees are seeking details on compliance with key federal acts such as the Help America Vote Act, National Voter Registration Act, and Civil Rights Act.

They are also asking for evidence of New Jersey’s collaboration with DHS to verify voter citizenship status and have requested documentation by August 17.
