Shiite Pilgrims Journey to Karbala for Arbaeen

Millions of Shiite Muslim pilgrims are traveling to the holy city of Karbala in Iraq for the Arbaeen, one of the world’s largest annual religious gatherings. Many pilgrims embark on long walks lasting several days, while others arrive from neighboring countries, such as Iran, crossing border checkpoints to continue their journey to the Imam Hussein Shrine in Karbala.

Along the pilgrimage routes, volunteers provide essential support, offering food, water, and shelter to those undertaking the journey. The event marks the culmination of a 40-day mourning period following the Day of Ashura.

Arbaeen commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, who died in the Battle of Karbala in 680 A.D. His death is a pivotal moment in Shiite Islam.

The pilgrimage attracts millions of worshippers from within Iraq and across the globe. At the Imam Hussein Shrine and the nearby Imam Abbas Shrine, countless participants engage in prayers and devotional rituals, including chest beating as an expression of mourning and reaching out to touch the shrine.

The gathering continues to draw vast numbers every year, illustrating the deep spiritual commitment of Shiite Muslims. Scenes from the event capture pilgrims reaching out to the shrine, praying and engaging in ritual acts of mourning.

This year, the event takes place under the rising sun in Najaf, Iraq, and connects worshippers in a profound communal experience. Pilgrims, including Iranian Shiite Muslims, arrive at border crossings and take part in the observance, demonstrating their dedication despite challenging conditions.

Throughout the journey, facilities such as water sprays are used to provide relief from the heat, ensuring that pilgrims can continue their march toward Karbala.
