Wilmette Police Department Welcomes Gizmo, the Electronics-Detecting K-9

The Wilmette Police Department has introduced a unique new member to its team, a dog named Gizmo. This two-year-old Golden Retriever-Labrador mix stands out as one of only four K-9s in Illinois trained to detect electronics, with approximately 100 such specialized dogs across the nation. Beyond his investigative role, Gizmo also serves as a comfort dog, helping to bring calm to stressful situations.

Sam Walker, Gizmo’s handler and a digital forensic analyst at the department, explains how his family had been hoping to get a dog for some time, aligning perfectly with Gizmo’s arrival. “My kids wanted a dog, and it worked out well,” Walker shared. “I work extensively with digital forensics, making Gizmo a natural fit.” Originally intended to be a service dog, Gizmo had received obedience training but did not pass due to excessive pulling on the leash.

Gizmo’s journey led him to the Jordan Detection K-9 Electronic Storage Detection program in Indianapolis. This program specializes in training dogs to identify the chemical compounds in electronics. Walker underwent a two-week handler certification course at the National Computer Forensic Institute in Alabama to work with Gizmo effectively. Walker notes that the Labrador breed excels in this field due to its outstanding sense of smell and reports that Gizmo can locate various electronics, from laptops to USB drives, that store data.

The Jordan Detection agency highlights the role of electronics detection K-9s in assisting law enforcement. These dogs help rapidly recover evidence in cases involving child exploitation, terrorism, and white-collar crimes. The use of K-9s in investigations allows officers to locate and recover electronic devices more efficiently than manual searches. Gizmo can find these devices, even if damaged or hidden, swiftly and effectively.

Michael Robinson, Chief of Police in Wilmette, states that Gizmo responds to chemical scents used in electronic adhesives. Gizmo has successfully aided neighboring police agencies in finding evidence. The United States Secret Service funded Gizmo’s acquisition, training, and related expenses, while the cost to the village is limited to about $2,400 per year for Gizmo’s sustenance and care.

In addition to his detective skills, Gizmo takes on the role of a comfort dog. He helps to alleviate anxiety and stress among police officers and the public, including victims and families in distress. Gizmo is available for visits in the social work office, providing comfort and relaxation to those who might be nervous or anxious. Gizmo attends community events throughout the year, becoming a valued resource and loved by the department.
