Trump and Thune: Reports of Strained Relations Overstated

Senate Majority Leader John Thune clarified reports about his relationship with President Donald Trump, describing them as exaggerated. In a conversation with Fox News Digital, Thune stated, ‘I’ve heard from him twice this morning already. He called me over the weekend, and we talk regularly.’

Recently, Trump generated speculation by questioning whether Thune was suited to lead Senate Republicans, likely influenced by the SAVE America Act’s stalling in the Senate. Despite this, Thune doesn’t perceive Trump’s remarks as a personal attack, acknowledging their shared objective, albeit with differing approaches.

Trump emphasized, ‘We have, sometimes, disagreements about how best to get there.’

Thune noted the procedural hurdles inherent in the Senate’s operations, adding, ‘We have those candid conversations, but I’m not worried about that relationship.’ He praised Trump’s persistent efforts to achieve progress.

Challenges in Passing SAVE America Act

There is significant interest among Trump, Senate Republicans, and their supporters in securing the passage of the SAVE America Act. Online discussions and conference conversations indicate mounting pressure to pass the bill, despite the Senate’s current legislative priorities.

While Republicans aim to prevent a government shutdown and finalize nominations, the SAVE America Act remains elusive. Thune highlighted the complexities involved, mentioning, ‘There are good days and bad days,’ indicating recent challenges.

Despite introducing the precursor to the SAVE America Act, Thune recognizes the obstacles, noting, ‘Every single Senate Democrat has shut it down each of the five times that it’s been brought to the floor.’ He is considering budget reconciliation as a possible avenue, although securing 50 votes remains challenging.

Senate Dynamics and the Filibuster Challenge

Thune emphasized the difficulty in operating within a Senate that requires bipartisanship for legislative progress. He stated, ‘I keep asking the question, am I the only one in this town that can count to 50?’

The filibuster poses additional challenges, with Thune noting the lack of Democratic support and the improbability of 50 Republicans voting to override it.

Thune’s viewpoint reflects the Senate’s nature, where legislation necessitates consensus, contrasting with the House’s approach. He underlined the importance of listening and building consensus to achieve results.

Thune concluded, ‘This place was supposed to be difficult, so that no dictator could master it.’
