New research from Rockefeller University suggests that an amino acid found in protein-rich foods and supplements, arginine, plays a crucial role in fighting cancer and viral infections. The study highlights the importance of arginine levels in immune system function.
Arginine and Immune Function
The study reveals that low arginine levels hinder the production of MHC-1 proteins, essential for the immune system to detect cancer and viruses. Sohail Tavazoie, leading the research at Rockefeller University, explains that cancers and viruses decrease arginine levels in tissues. Additionally, arginine naturally declines with age, affecting the body’s immune response.
Supplementation with arginine shows potential in countering these deficiencies. Research indicates that arginine supplementation may reduce the severity of viral infections such as flu and COVID-19. The research utilized doses equivalent to about 10 grams of arginine daily, similar to two standard over-the-counter tablets.
Impact on Disease Risk
Researchers examine how arginine levels influence gene expression, affecting the body’s ability to fight diseases. They identify 414 proteins at low levels when arginine is scarce, with a focus on MHC-1, which requires multiple arginine blocks to form. Low arginine levels cause disruptions in MHC-1 production, reducing the immune system’s ability to recognize threats.
In dietary studies with mice, those on arginine-rich diets showed fewer colon tumors and milder viral infections. Conversely, low-arginine diets contributed to worse outcomes in flu, COVID-19, and tumor growth. Published in Cell, the findings suggest dietary arginine deficiency may worsen disease outcomes, warranting further studies and clinical trials.
Tavazoie notes that age-related declines in arginine could partly explain the increased risk of diseases like colon cancer, flu, and COVID-19 in older adults. His team aims to test whether supplementing arginine can improve outcomes for high-risk flu patients.
