Yankees Defeat Cardinals 2-0 with Lombard Jr.’s Homer in MLB Debut
The New York Yankees secured a 2-0 victory against the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night, marked by a memorable big league debut for George Lombard Jr.
In his second at-bat during the fifth inning, Lombard hit a decisive 0-2 pitch over the left-field seats off Cardinals’ starter Hunter Dobbins. This 392-foot home run sent the fans into applause and allowed Lombard’s parents to share a proud moment in the stands. Lombard’s homer provided the Yankees a firm 2-0 lead.
At 21 years and 63 days old, Lombard became the sixth-youngest Yankee since 1985 to debut and was only surpassed by Derek Jeter as the second-youngest shortstop. Jeter made his debut in 1995 at 20 years and 337 days.
Contributing defensively, Lombard assisted Ryan Weathers in pitching six robust innings. Lombard started key inning-ending double plays in the third and fifth. Notably, in the third, he made an off-balance throw after fielding a grounder from Blaze Jordan. In the fifth, he turned a grounder from Nathan Church into another successful double play.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. also homered in the second inning, aiding the Yankees to their tenth win in 16 games. Meanwhile, Weathers delivered a second consecutive scoreless start, allowing only four hits and striking out six without any walks. A critical play was executed by newcomer Heliot Ramos in the sixth inning, who caught a flyball against the wall.
Relief pitcher David Bednar went on to earn his 25th save, contributing to New York’s league-leading 12th shutout of the season. On the Cardinals’ side, Hunter Dobbins allowed two runs over 6 1/3 innings. Their offense was hindered by the last-minute lineup change of Jordan Walker due to knee inflammation.
Looking ahead, the series finale will feature St. Louis RHP Andre Pallante facing New York RHP Will Warren on Wednesday night.
