Primary Election Results in Michigan and Other States

Polls have closed in four states holding primary elections: Michigan, Missouri, Kansas, and Virginia. The key race in Michigan is the Democratic Senate primary involving a fierce contest between Dr. Abdul El-Sayed and Representative Haley Stevens. Dr. El-Sayed, a progressive former public health official, faces Ms. Stevens, a centrist endorsed by party leaders. The winner will replace Senator Gary Peters, a Democrat who is retiring, in a battleground that could influence Senate control.

Representative Wesley Bell of Missouri fought off a primary challenge from former Representative Cori Bush, known for her criticism of Israel and membership in the progressive group called the Squad. Ms. Bush’s attempt to reclaim her St. Louis seat ended as Mr. Bell secured victory. Dr. El-Sayed, advocating for universal health care, received support from progressive leaders, while Ms. Stevens drew endorsements from party leaders and cast herself as a bipartisan solution to Washington’s dysfunction.

A staggering $60 million from external sources bolstered Ms. Stevens’s campaign. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), a pro-Israel group, contributed significantly, making campaign finance a pivotal issue.

A win for AIPAC occurred as Representative Wesley Bell triumphed over Cori Bush.

Alongside Michigan and Missouri, Kansas and Virginia held primaries on Tuesday. In Virginia, Democratic voters selected Elaine Luria to oppose Jen Kiggans, a Republican, for a closely contested House seat.

In Kansas, State Senator Ty Masterson, backed by President Trump, won the Republican nomination for governor. The Democratic primary featured two state lawmakers competing against a mayor to succeed the term-limited Democratic Governor Laura Kelly.

Ms. Stevens faced criticism from Dr. El-Sayed over campaign financing. Despite this, she dismissed the attacks as mere “campaign-finance zoomies.” Detroit’s poll reporting often results in late race calls.

Young voters from college towns like Washtenaw County are anticipated as Dr. El-Sayed’s stronghold, with early results showing his lead there.

Missouri voters rejected a ballot measure that sought to eliminate state income tax, shifting revenue generation to increased sales taxes, a move proposed by the Republican-led Legislature.

The Kansas Democratic primary aimed to retain the governorship with candidates Cindy Holscher and Ethan Corson debating strategies to appeal to non-Democratic voters.

The Missouri Legislature faced defeat as voters rejected Amendment 4, a measure intended to make passing citizen-led initiatives harder.
