Democrats face a tough election night in Kansas, where Republicans are favored in both the Senate and gubernatorial races. The Senate candidate, Adam Hamilton, has been a strong fundraiser but faces an uphill battle against Republican Senator Roger Marshall. Kansas has not elected a Democrat to the U.S. Senate in nearly a century, highlighting the challenge Hamilton faces.
Kansas also features an open gubernatorial race, with President Donald Trump-backed Ty Masterson winning the Republican primary. Masterson, who secured the nomination with 40% of the vote, will compete against Cindy Holscher, whose nomination was confirmed by the Associated Press at 10:23 p.m. ET.
Hamilton’s Path in the Senate Race
Hamilton, a pastor in Leawood, has raised $3.6 million in the early months of his campaign, showing some competitiveness for Democrats. However, overturning a Republican streak dating back nearly 100 years remains challenging. A Tavern Research poll from July placed Marshall 8 points ahead of Hamilton, reflecting Kansas’ partisan tendencies and Marshall’s incumbency.
Marshall won the 2020 Senate race by 11 points, while Republicans have reliably carried Kansas in federal elections, with Trump winning by more than 16 percentage points in 2024. Voter views on Marshall are mixed, with 37% holding a favorable opinion and 38% unfavorable. Hamilton, although lesser-known, can capitalize on the lack of voter familiarity, as over 80% have no strong opinion of him.
Hamilton aims to appeal to suburban moderates in the Kansas City area, where Democrats have been gaining ground, as demonstrated by Governor Laura Kelly’s success. Still, state-level wins have not translated to federal victories for Democrats in Kansas.
Historical Context: Democratic Challenges in Kansas
The last Democrat to win a Kansas Senate seat was George McGill in 1932. While several Kansas Senate races have been competitive, such as Greg Orman’s independent bid in 2014 and Barbara Bollier’s 2020 campaign, Republicans maintained their hold. Kansas shows more flexibility in gubernatorial races, with Democrats like Kathleen Sebelius and Laura Kelly winning recent elections.
Republican Hopes in the Gubernatorial Race
Republicans see a prime opportunity to gain the governor’s office. With Laura Kelly term-limited, the gubernatorial race becomes a focal point. Holscher won the Democratic primary with 48% against Ethan Corson’s 39.2% and Curt Skoog’s 12.7%. Despite past Democratic successes at the governor’s level, structural advantages favor Republicans in 2026.
The Kansas Legislature is predominantly Republican, and most statewide offices are Republican-held. Midterm elections, following Trump’s 2024 win, tend to favor Republicans, with forecasts like Sabato’s Crystal Ball and Kalshi rating the gubernatorial race as leaning Republican.
Democrats highlight Kelly’s ability to attract moderate voters in suburban areas and point to voter backlash against conservative policies. Kansas’ 2022 rejection of an anti-abortion amendment also offers Democrats hope. Although the Senate race leans Republican, the gubernatorial contest promises to be one of the closely watched races of the 2026 election cycle.
