Unprecedented Solar Surface Images Captured by Inouye Telescope

Researchers have taken unprecedented images of the sun’s surface, revealing a dynamic and curious view. Observing the sun directly is hazardous without suitable eye protection. However, the National Science Foundation’s Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope, positioned in Maui, Hawaii, allowed scientists to study the sun’s heated surface safely.
Initially, the scientists aimed to fine-tune and test the telescope’s capabilities. Upon reviewing the images, they discovered they had captured the sun’s outer layer in higher resolution than before. The images revealed unique feathery patterns, reminiscent of Van Gogh’s ‘Starry Night,’ according to Ruizhu Chen, a solar physicist from Stanford University who was uninvolved in the research. These patterns are due to magnetized plasma, moving at different speeds, causing ripples on the solar surface. This phenomenon, known for influencing fluid dynamics, is seen on Earth and planets like Jupiter and Saturn but never at this level on the sun’s surface, as explained by study co-author Friedrich Wöger from the National Solar Observatory.
The research findings appeared in the journal Nature. Understanding the sun’s activities aids scientists in predicting coronal mass ejections. When these energy bursts impact Earth, they can create solar storms, disrupt GPS systems, and generate vibrant auroras.
