Dre Greenlaw Reflects on Return to 49ers and Challenges with Broncos

Linebacker Dre Greenlaw has returned to the San Francisco 49ers after a challenging stint with the Denver Broncos. Greenlaw had signed a three-year, $31.5 million contract with the Broncos, but after nearly a year, he was released and returned to the 49ers on a one-year deal.

The transition from Denver to California has been noticeable for Greenlaw. He mentioned the difficulties he faced with Denver’s altitude. “My mouth’s dry, my nose is dry, I can’t sleep,” he shared with The Athletic. The air quality in California offers a stark contrast. “This fresh air, bro, it makes a difference,” he added.

Greenlaw’s time with the Broncos started poorly. On the second day of Organized Team Activities (OTAs), he suffered a severe quadriceps strain, sidelining him until Week 7. This injury affected his relationship with head coach Sean Payton. “When you pop your quad, people start looking at you,” Greenlaw remarked, feeling isolated after another hamstring issue later in the season.

Due to these setbacks, Greenlaw spent more time with trainers than teammates. He managed to play in eight games, with seven as a starter, recording 43 tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack, and one interception. The differences in defensive schemes between Denver and San Francisco proved challenging for Greenlaw.

“I don’t blame anything on the Broncos,” he stated, acknowledging his lack of preparation post-injuries. “I just wasn’t in the shape I needed to be.”

Now back with the 49ers on a $7.5 million contract, Greenlaw feels at home in Southern California. “I get to still play football and prove people wrong,” he said, expressing both relief and determination.
