Qantas Launches Direct Flights with New ‘Wellbeing Zone’

Qantas Introduces Direct Routes and Innovations

Qantas, Australia’s main airline, is launching the world’s first direct flights between Sydney and London, followed by Sydney to New York. This initiative includes a unique in-flight ‘Wellbeing Zone’. The project, named Project Sunrise, began in 2017 and aims to connect Australia’s east coast to major global destinations.

According to Sarah Udy, Qantas’ executive manager of product and service, Project Sunrise provided a chance to redesign the customer experience. The ‘Wellbeing Zone’ is a major innovation in their cabin design.

Details of the New Routes

The direct Sydney-London service will start in October 2027 and could save travelers up to four hours compared to current one-stop flights. The Sydney-New York route will launch later. The flights will use specially modified Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft, capable of covering more than 16,000 kilometers (roughly 10,000 miles) nonstop for up to 22 hours.

These innovations come as airlines explore new ways to improve long-haul travel. Recent trends include ultra-private cabins, personalized lighting, AI-powered services, and new cabin layouts for work and social activities.

Challenges and Market Dynamics

Project Sunrise launches amidst challenges for the aviation industry, like increased fuel costs due to unrest in the Middle East. The IATA reported a global air passenger demand drop of 1.7 percent in June 2026 compared to June 2025. This decline is linked to weaker domestic markets in China, the U.S., and Japan, as well as a drop in demand for Middle Eastern carriers.

However, the U.S. Travel Association projects that total travel spending in the U.S. will reach $1.42 trillion in 2027, with international inbound travel growth expected.

Innovative Aircraft Design

The ‘Wellbeing Zone’ is part of Qantas’ innovative approach, enabled by the aircraft’s spacious layout. Qantas’ A350-1000ULR planes will have 238 seats across four cabins, the lowest-density Airbus A350 configuration. This layout offers more personal space and a dedicated wellness area.

Although many airlines are enhancing business-class products and improving cabin air quality, Qantas is pioneering a specific in-flight Wellbeing Zone. The industry is increasingly focused on reducing the physical impacts of long-haul travel through better designs.

Each aircraft for Project Sunrise includes an extra 20,000-liter fuel tank for longer missions. Qantas plans to receive 12 A350 aircraft.

Pricing for Project Sunrise

Qantas has yet to announce formal fares for Project Sunrise. However, Qantas International CEO Cam Wallace mentioned to Executive Traveller that tickets may be priced at a 20 percent premium over current one-stop services. Estimated one-way economy fares might start at AU$1,600 (about US$1,130), with first-class suites exceeding AU$14,000 (around US$9,885).

Historically, customers pay more for direct ultra-long-haul services, exemplified by the strong performance of Qantas’s Perth-London route. Tickets for the initial Sydney-London flights under Project Sunrise will go on sale in February, before the October 2027 launch.
