Wisconsin Rep. Francesca Hong’s Views on Iconic Holidays Stir Debate

Wisconsin state Rep. Francesca Hong leads the Democratic gubernatorial primary but faces criticism for her comments on popular U.S. holidays. In a November 2020 social media post, Hong, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, suggested canceling Thanksgiving. She described it as a celebration of colonialism and a ‘superspreader event’ harmful to Indigenous people. Although she later retracted this statement, calling Thanksgiving her ‘favorite holiday,’ the controversy remains.

Hong’s opinions on other holidays have also drawn attention. On Valentine’s Day 2022, she expressed dissatisfaction with how capitalism influences holiday celebrations, reflecting her experience in the service industry. ‘As if we weren’t invisible enough,’ she wrote, criticizing how the holiday affects service workers.

Figures on the left have historically challenged holidays like Thanksgiving, Independence Day, and Columbus Day due to their historical contexts. Hong’s series of critical posts about multiple holidays brings renewed scrutiny in her swing-state campaign.

Her dislike for Halloween is well-documented. In 2019, she mentioned avoiding work on Halloween and found costumes irksome. By 2025, she reiterated her disinterest, stating it as off-limits in her conversations.

Critics and supporters alike have referenced the Grinch in response to Hong’s stance, symbolizing her perceived disdain for celebrations. An anonymous user coined the term ‘grinchmaxxing’ to describe her outlook.

Hong has also criticized fireworks, questioning their timing and expressing her displeasure in posts from 2019 and 2020. Republican commentator Steve Guest suggested her actions appeared designed to alienate traditional holiday enthusiasts.

While some suggest Hong has a negative view of Christmas, pointing to a post where a Christmas tree background made her feel ‘slightly attacked,’ she has also posted positive reflections on the holiday.

The idea of a ‘war on Christmas’ is a long-standing conservative charge against Democrats, although liberals reject this concept. Despite her critical perspective, some find Hong’s approach relatable and indicative of her character.
