Las Vegas Raiders Prepare for New Season with Fernando Mendoza and Kirk Cousins

The Las Vegas Raiders made a significant decision in last April’s NFL Draft by selecting Fernando Mendoza, an Indiana Hoosiers champion and Heisman Trophy winner, as their potential franchise quarterback. While it is uncertain when Mendoza will take the field as the starting quarterback, veteran Kirk Cousins, who recently joined the team, offers his mentorship and experience.

In a conversation with ESPN’s Dan Graziano, Kirk Cousins spoke about the dynamics of the quarterback room during the early days of training camp. “Good quarterback room. We’ve enjoyed just working together as a group. We have good dialogue every day. I think the organization is positioned well, having drafted Fernando,” Cousins commented. “I’m gonna try to hold him off as long as I can. We’ll see how it goes up ahead.”

When Graziano pointed out the unique position of Cousins aiding Mendoza’s acclimation to the league, Cousins agreed, “Oh yeah, you can do both. You can do both.”

Mendoza, entering his rookie season, brings a strong resume and high expectations. His adjustment to the NFL is facilitated by Cousins’ presence, a common strategy adopted by teams training rookie quarterbacks. Raiders’ head coach, Klint Kubiak, affirmed Cousins as the starting quarterback for the start of training camp but expressed his desire for Mendoza and Aidan O’Connell to challenge him. “He’s the guy, and he deserves it because he’s played really good football. But I want Fernando and Aidan [O’Connell] to push him,” Kubiak stated.

Cousins seems committed to contributing positively to the Raiders, marking the fourth team in his NFL career since 2012. His experience as a four-time Pro Bowler is a valuable asset for Mendoza’s development and the Raiders’ quest for victories. “Honestly, it’s exceeded my expectations. You know, I tried to get my mind right for living on Mars when I moved here, and it’s been great. It’s sunny every day. Great culture here. I like my teammates. I like the coaches. I like the system. So, I’m excited now; we just gotta get the ball right and go win some games,” Cousins shared.

Last month, a Fox Sports report highlighted that sportsbooks set the Raiders’ win total at over 5.5 games. Achieving six wins would be a significant improvement over last season, which secured them the top pick used to draft Mendoza. However, Cousins remains the frontrunner on the depth chart, leaving fans eager to see when Mendoza will get his chance to lead as the starting quarterback.
