Pressure Mounts on Max Miller Amid Allegations

Republican Congressman Max Miller from Ohio faces increased pressure to step down due to domestic abuse allegations by his ex-wife, Emily Moreno. Recently, Ohio Senator Jon Husted joined calls for Miller’s resignation, suggesting he should focus on his family instead of remaining in office.

Miller continues to deny these accusations, labeling them as politically driven. He has invited a House Ethics Committee investigation. As of now, no decision has been made by the Committee, and local authorities have not pressed any charges.

Political Reactions and Calls for Resignation

The allegations have impacted Miller’s political trajectory. Despite numerous calls from GOP members to resign, Miller insists on continuing his term and campaign. Jon Husted highlighted the importance of addressing these accusations while urging Miller to prioritize his family’s well-being.

Bernie Moreno, Miller’s former father-in-law, voiced his belief that Miller should not serve in Congress amid the ongoing allegations, stressing the importance of character in public office. Similarly, Senators Roger Marshall, Shelley Moore Capito, and Tim Sheehy have also expressed support for Miller’s resignation.

Senator Rick Scott emphasized the seriousness of such allegations but recognized that voters ultimately decide Miller’s political future. Senator Katie Britt echoed the call for resignation, indicating historical patterns of abuse in Miller’s interviews.

Republican Lawmakers Seek Investigation

Some GOP members have also requested further investigation into the claims. Representative Nancy Mace advocates for a House Ethics Committee review, describing the allegations as severe. Senators Lisa Murkowski and Cynthia Lummis agreed, stressing the importance of the review process.

Diverging Opinions Among Leading Politicians

Despite the controversy, former President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson have avoided public calls for Miller’s resignation. Senate Majority Leader John Thune has also remained silent. Trump described the situation as “very sad” and has opted not to involve himself publicly.

The calls from several GOP leaders highlight a significant division within the party as they consider the implications for upcoming elections in November.

Possibility of Replacing Miller

Currently, Republicans have limited options to replace Miller on the ballot due to deadlines under Ohio election rules. Having missed the earlier August 5 deadline, replacing him now would require a more complicated process.

The GOP has potential candidates in mind if Miller steps down. Possible replacements include Ohio state Representative Mike Dovilla, former Representative Jim Renacci, state Representative Melanie Miller, and former state Senator Kevin Coughlin.

Jim Renacci, who once held Miller’s seat and ran for governor, has expressed openness to reconsider a congressional run if Miller exits the race.
