Federal Charges in Nolan Wells Investigation Unrelated to His Death

Three individuals from outside Mississippi face federal charges for alleged threats connected to the Nolan Wells investigation. These charges don’t relate to the teenager’s death. Prosecutors allege the defendants targeted a judge, witnesses, and public officials involved in the investigation.

Nolan Wells, 18, was reported missing after a boat trip with friends to Horn Island, off the Mississippi Gulf Coast, on July 4. It was reported that he had stayed behind voluntarily. Yet, Wells’ body was found two days later by a U.S. park ranger.

Authorities have yet to identify suspects or make arrests concerning his death. Investigators propose Wells remained on the island after others left, but Wells’ family and their attorney, Ben Crump, have questioned this account.

Edward James Porter from Illinois allegedly threatened a witness and their family. Michelle Francine Edwards from Ohio faces charges over made bomb threats aimed at Mississippi government offices. Joseph Alfredo Vasquez Dumarce from California also faces charges for allegedly sending a threatening message to a Jackson County judge.

Authorities state the defendants don’t know Wells, his family, or his friends.

Since the body’s discovery, both families and investigators have focused on autopsy results. At a July 22 news conference, Crump announced that independent forensic review did not determine the cause of death.
