Rep. Justin Pearson, representing District 86 in Tennessee, has secured a victory in the Democratic primary for Tennessee’s newly redrawn 9th Congressional District, a significant achievement for one of the ‘Tennessee Three’ lawmakers. Pearson defeated competitors including state Sen. London Lamar, community activist Marion LaTroy Alexandria-Williams, and attorney Jim Torino. The win sets the stage for a showdown in November against the Republican nominee.
Pearson’s campaign, bolstered by a substantial fundraising effort, attracted significant attention and support. He raised millions of dollars, far surpassing his Democratic opponents. His success can partially be attributed to the backing from notable Democrats associated with the progressive ‘Squad,’ including Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ayanna Pressley, and Summer Lee. These representatives joined Pearson at a Memphis rally, enhancing his campaign’s visibility.
Pearson, renowned for his passionate and preacher-like speeches, also received support from national left-wing organizations. Groups such as Justice Democrats, the Working Families Party, MoveOn, and Indivisible endorsed his candidacy. His prominence rose significantly in 2023 when he participated in a gun-control protest following the Covenant School shooting in Nashville, where six lives were lost.
Following the protest, Pearson, along with Rep. Justin Jones, faced expulsion by Republican lawmakers. However, both regained their seats shortly afterward. Gloria Johnson, another Democrat involved, avoided expulsion by a narrow margin. The trio, known as the ‘Tennessee Three,’ played a significant role in highlighting gun control issues.
Thursday’s primary victory by Pearson comes in the wake of Tennessee’s congressional map redrawing. This adjustment divided Memphis among three Republican-favored districts, leading longtime Democratic Rep. Steve Cohen to announce his retirement. Previously, Memphis was contained within the 9th District, providing Democrats with a dependable seat in a state dominated by Republicans.
Rep. Steve Cohen had been the sole Democrat in Tennessee’s nine-member House delegation since 2023, surrounded by eight Republicans. With the new map favoring the GOP across all districts, Pearson’s win marks a noteworthy triumph for Democrats in Tennessee.
