NATO Jets Scramble Amid Increased Russian Flights Near Eastern Flank

NATO scrambled its fighter jets over twice as much in July compared to the same time last year. This increase occurred along the eastern border of the alliance.

On Wednesday, NATO reported that Russian military planes flew near NATO airspace without proper flight plans or transponder signals. This situation led to NATO jets intercepting these aircraft. Transponders provide crucial information like aircraft altitude and precise location.

In the first half of 2026, NATO member Norway activated its fighter jets 62 times in response to Russian flights near the northeastern edge of NATO, according to Newsweek’s July report.

Oslo revealed that within just six months this year, it identified more Russian aircraft near its airspace than any full year since 2021. Although military aircraft often fly close to rival countries, Russian bombers approaching NATO borders are seen primarily as intimidation tactics.

Additionally, The Wall Street Journal mentioned on Thursday that U.S. intelligence assessments suggest Russia might attempt a “limited” strike on a NATO nation within the next few years.
