Cruise Lines Target Chair Hogging Habits
Chair hogging has been a persistent issue for major cruise lines, with several companies now addressing the problem of pool pirates. For years, cruise passengers have used items such as towels, flip-flops, and even dolls to reserve lounge chairs by the pool, leaving them unoccupied for hours. Now, Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is taking steps to tackle this challenge.
Norwegian Cruise Line’s Policy Enforcement
Reports on social media highlight that NCL is gaining approval for enforcing its chair-hogging policy. According to unrealcruises on Instagram, crew members aboard the Norwegian Escape have started marking unoccupied chairs with stickers. Approximately one hour later, unattended lounger items are removed to allow other guests to access the space. This enforcement has been well-received by passengers.
NCL’s official policy, available on the company’s website, states, “Pool, deck, and theater chairs may not be reserved.” Additionally, the policy specifies that topless sunbathing, loud radios, and certain recreational equipment are not allowed.
Passenger Reactions and Strategies
Cruise passengers have voiced their experiences on various platforms such as Facebook, Reddit, and Instagram. One passenger shared that their husband dealt with the situation by moving belongings off chairs. Others recommend allowing attendants to handle disputes over occupied loungers.
Passengers note that the most common items left to reserve chairs include towels, water bottles, and beach bags. While some visitors feel entitled to bypass rules, others advocate for timestamp systems that clearly monitor chair usage.
One Instagram user expressed relief, “Peace at last,” while a traveler on Reddit commented on the sense of entitlement among certain passengers. Many agree that leaving items on a chair while using pool facilities is acceptable, but occupying them while being absent for extended periods is not welcomed.
