On Thursday night in Indianapolis, Caitlin Clark confronted the difficult stats of her recent game. The Indiana Fever player acknowledged her eight turnovers and two missed free throws in the final seconds of regulation, ultimately accepting responsibility for the team’s 86-84 overtime defeat to the Las Vegas team.
As a three-time All-Star and a recent addition to the FIBA Women’s World Cup team, Clark admitted the frustration of missing crucial free throws. “Those are free throws I usually make. One of them gives us a two-possession lead,” she stated.
Despite scoring 20 points, delivering eight assists, and making two decisive 3-pointers in the last minutes of regulation, the focal point for Clark was the mistakes. In both the first and second halves, sizable leads melted away. Jackie Young capitalized by scoring 15 consecutive points between the second and third quarters, while Chelsea Gray exploited errors in the final moments with timely 3-point shots.
Clark’s shooting was 7 of 20 overall, hitting 2 of 10 on 3-point attempts. She also ended with four fouls compared to three rebounds. She candidly stated, “We still battled, still fought. But, honestly, it was me that made the costly errors for us.”
Contributing to the loss, Kelsey Mitchell, the WNBA Player of the Month for July, also failed to convert a critical free throw. Additionally, the opportunity to prevent a tying 3-point shot was missed.
Coach Stephanie White pointed out crucial turnovers that resulted in 18 points against them. She admitted her own lapse in not requesting a timeout during overtime.
Despite the setbacks, White reassured, “Players already hate that they miss free throws, right? You’ve just got to keep them positive in those moments.”
