Inaugural Game of Women’s Pro Baseball League Draws Excited Fans

On Saturday, Aug. 1, the atmosphere at Springfield’s Robin Roberts Stadium was electric as fans gathered for the Women’s Pro Baseball League’s inaugural game. The event attracted people from various parts of the United States and even from as far away as South Korea and Australia.

For the grandparents of New York Heights’ first baseman London Studer, the weather was a concern. They worried it might delay the game against the Los Angeles Queens, possibly forcing them to miss their flight the next morning. However, as the gates opened, fans excitedly rushed in, eager to witness the historic event.

A young girl, equipped with a baseball mitt, was among the first to enter, greeted by a custom bobblehead of Queens outfielder Mo’ne Davis. Amidst the hustle of stadium staff dealing with signage and concessions, fans flocked to the merchandise booth. The strong demand led to a sales limit of two items per person.

Supporters came clad in gear from the league’s four teams: the Queens, the Heights, the Boston Hunters, and the San Francisco Firebells. Many fans, thrilled to be part of this new chapter in women’s sports, donned hats, shirts, and sweatshirts, regardless of specific team loyalty.

“We hope it’s the fifth and the last,” said Queens’ third baseman Ashton Lansdell, reflecting the league’s ambition for longevity.

On the day before the game, athletes like Sabrina Robinson from the Boston Hunters readied themselves for the weekend’s activities. Players greeted their relatives who traveled from across twelve countries, excited to see their daughters and sisters play professionally for the first time.

The league, overseen by Commissioner Justine Siegal, aims to support female athletes who have often faced barriers in baseball. Many league players, like Lansdell and Kelsie Whitmore of the Firebells, began playing at a young age. Various athletes, like those involved with Baseball For All, learned to persist in the sport despite challenges.
