Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers conducted a significant operation in Georgia, resulting in the arrest of more than 1,200 illegal migrants. This effort, known as Operation Safe Community, targeted individuals with criminal backgrounds in the Atlanta area.

Marcos Charles, ICE’s head of Enforcement and Removal Operations, discussed the arrests on ‘Fox & Friends.’ He emphasized the focus on those with prior criminal convictions, including sex offenders and child abusers.

“We arrested over 1,200 aliens, illegal aliens, out in the Atlanta, Georgia area. More than half of those people had criminal histories,” Charles stated.

According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), 720 of the arrested individuals were either convicted of or charged with various crimes.

Addressing Criminal Activity and Improving Community Safety

Charles detailed the types of criminal activities linked to those arrested, which included sex crimes, assault, and domestic violence. He argued the necessity of removing these individuals from U.S. streets, citing both their criminal records and illegal status.

The DHS posted information online about the operation, emphasizing its focus on criminal illegal immigrants and its role in maintaining community safety across the nation.

ICE recorded approximately 51,000 immigration arrests in July, marking its highest monthly total, exceeding the 43,000 arrests made in June.

Adapting to Challenges Amid Protests

Charles explained how ICE agents have adjusted their tactics in response to public protests and attempts to hinder arrests. This includes enhanced training and revised methodologies for conducting enforcement and arrests.

Among those apprehended was a Mexican national previously convicted for conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and driving offenses. Another individual from El Salvador faced charges including domestic battery and child cruelty.

Rising Threats and Calls to Abolish ICE

The operation follows a report indicating an 8,000% rise in death threats against ICE officers over recent months. Additionally, some progressive lawmakers have advocated for dismantling ICE due to concerns about its enforcement practices.
