In the memo reported by The Associated Press, Engelbert remarked, “I know many of you have received questions in recent weeks regarding transgender athlete participation in women’s basketball. I expect this topic will continue to receive significant attention.” She thanked those who have addressed media inquiries with professionalism.
The commissioner described the debate as “nuanced,” acknowledging its complexity. Engelbert mentioned plans for ongoing discussions with the Players Association over the coming weeks and months. Additionally, the league plans to offer listening sessions for team leaders to participate and share their viewpoints, highlighting the importance of feedback.
The memo coincided with the announcements from Kanter and White, triggering social media discussions critiquing WNBA’s policy on player eligibility based on genetic sex. This has placed the league at the core of the national debate on transgender participation in women’s sports.
The WNBA Players’ Association also issued a statement emphasizing a commitment to diversity and inclusion, stating, “We embrace justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
