On Saturday, Boston Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras faced an unexpected response from the Fenway Park crowd. Making his return after a two-game absence due to illness, Contreras was greeted with boos for not running out a ground ball to third base. The vocal disapproval followed him from the batter’s box to the dugout tunnel.
Contreras had been removed from his last appearance because of the illness and was reportedly still feeling its effects over the weekend.
I know how that looks but I’m also aware more than others that he’s a little beat up and told us before the game, ‘I don’t have everything today.’ So I’m fine, said Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy, in an interview with NESN.Especially with a guy that plays the game as hard as he does and how hard he turns around first base all the time, I’m fine with it.
In the game, Contreras struck out twice and managed one single. He declined to speak with the media following the match.
The Red Sox are expected to move past the incident without further discussion. The event highlights rising expectations as the team is in an impressive 27-5 streak since July 1.
