A heated altercation broke out at the Cleveland Browns training camp between pass rusher Jared Verse and rookie offensive tackle Spencer Fano during a practice session on Saturday. According to Zac Jackson from The Athletic, Verse engaged in a physical confrontation, throwing multiple punches as both players tumbled to the ground. Teammates quickly intervened to separate them, and both returned to the field for the subsequent play.
Fano, a notable No. 9 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft from Utah, has attracted attention as one of the leading tackle prospects. Following the altercation, he impressed fans with effective pass protection against Verse. This incident marks the second time a scuffle has occurred during the Browns’ training camp; a previous altercation involving several players took place on August 1.
Jared Verse, aged 25, joined the Browns following a significant trade that involved sending Myles Garrett, the previous NFL Defensive Player of the Year, to the Los Angeles Rams. Recently, Chris Easterling from the Akron Beacon Journal reported on the mentoring role Verse assumed with Fano, who acknowledged Verse’s guidance in helping him improve his skills.
“He’s so good at helping coach me up,” Fano shared, noting how Verse’s feedback aided in refining his technique during numerous practice reps.
The Browns are preparing for a challenging season as they aim to improve on their previous 5-12 record. A quarterback competition is underway between Shedeur Sanders, who played significant games last season, and veteran Deshaun Watson, coming back from injury. Regardless of who starts as quarterback, Fano’s role in fortifying the offensive line is critical. On defense, Verse’s contribution is vital following the departure of Garrett.
Cleveland will face the Chicago Bears in their first preseason game on Saturday, August 15. Their regular season opener is scheduled against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, September 13.
