Tommy John Bids Farewell Amid Health Battles

Tommy John, a former New York Yankees pitcher renowned for the elbow surgery that bears his name, released a heartfelt message to fans during the Yankees’ Old-Timers’ Day celebration. At 83, John has been facing health challenges in Florida.

The Yankees organization honored John, who expressed gratitude to the team and the Steinbrenner family. He appreciated the chance to bid farewell to fans and friends who have supported his 26-year career.

“I want to thank the Yankees organization & the Steinbrenner family for giving me this opportunity to say goodbye to everyone, along with all the friends & fans who followed me throughout my 26-year career,” John’s message read.

John credited Dr. Frank Jobe for the surgery that saved his career. This procedure, which has since benefited countless pitchers, allowed John to resume playing after his 1974 operation. Despite missing the 1975 season, he returned to secure over 160 victories and earned three All-Star selections afterward.

John concluded his career as a four-time All-Star, spending eight seasons with the Yankees. His career also included stints with the Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, California Angels, Cleveland Indians, and Oakland Athletics. He ended with a 3.34 ERA and 2,245 strikeouts.

Reflecting on his journey, John shared an enduring memory from his father, who advised him to stay true to himself beyond baseball achievements. John expressed his heartfelt thanks to fans who supported him and his teammates.

“The day I left for my first job as a pitcher, my father looked at me & said, ‘Good luck, Tommy. Just remember one thing: whether you make it big in the big leagues or you don’t, you’ll always just be Tommy John from Terre Haute, Indiana,'” his message added.
