Bride-to-Be Warns of Allergic Reaction from Eyelash Extensions
A bride-to-be wanted to look like a princess for her wedding but ended up with a severe allergic reaction to a fake eyelash treatment.
Polly Bibby, 26, usually favors minimal makeup. Before her wedding, she decided to try classic eyelash extensions compared to her usual style. She underwent a patch test, with no immediate reaction, so she proceeded with the procedure in early July before her wedding day.
DOCTORS WARN OF DANGERS AFTER EMERGENCY INVOLVING INFLUENCER
Following an $88 treatment, Bibby initially enjoyed her enhanced appearance. However, just hours later, her eyes became watery and sore. At first, she attributed these symptoms to hay fever, but when they started to sting and stick together due to yellow discharge, she realized something was wrong.
Contacting an urgent medical line, she was advised to visit the nearest hospital emergency room. A photo shows her with red, raw, and swollen eyes. Nurses at Hinchingbrooke Hospital in Cambridge confirmed an allergic reaction to the extensions.
WEIGHT-LOSS DRUGS LINKED TO COSMETIC SIDE EFFECTS
Doctors provided antibiotics and antihistamines and advised her to wait three days for the swelling to subside before removing the false lashes.
Dr. Rebecca J. Taylor, a board-certified ophthalmologist, stated that artificial lashes should be applied by experienced professionals in a safe and clean environment. ”The risks include trauma or infection of the eyelid or cornea, allergic reactions to the glue, and potential eyelash loss,” Taylor noted.
Taylor emphasized that infections may arise from inadequate hygiene or damage during application. Despite gradual healing, Bibby from Cambridgeshire feared her eyes would remain red on her wedding day. She shares her ordeal to caution other brides about undergoing treatments near their important day.
Bibby recounted, ”I wanted to feel like a princess but ended up looking different.” Her experience started about four to five hours after the appointment, when her fiancé noticed her eyes appeared red.
By evening, her eyes became red, raw, and stinging. She candidly compared her appearance to Sloth from ”The Goonies.”
Her vision deteriorated as her eyes stuck together from the discharge, similar to newborn conjunctivitis. Medical staff were reportedly shocked by the severity of her reaction.
”I was screaming, crying, and my eyes remained red and swollen,” Bibby recalled.
She described the lash removal as feeling like acid on her face. Despite predictions, nothing prepared her for such an experience.
”I will avoid eyelash extensions for my wedding. The pain was not worth it, and mascara is enough,” she concluded.
