“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” maintains its impressive momentum in U.S. theaters, collecting $144.5 million in its second weekend, as per studio estimates. The Sony-Marvel release has now gathered a staggering $1.67 billion globally within a brief 10-day period, positioning it among the highest-earning blockbusters ever. No other film has amassed such a high domestic total so quickly. Currently, the movie has earned $655.1 million in the U.S. and Canada. Internationally, it has already exceeded $1 billion. In a mere seven days, “Brand New Day” took the title of the highest-grossing movie of the year, overtaking “Toy Story 5” which stands at $1.07 billion globally.

This achievement marks the first instance of a Sony movie exceeding $100 million in its second weekend, nearing the best second-week performance recorded by “The Force Awakens” in 2015 at $149.2 million. Another success, Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” also crossed past the $1 billion mark. In its fourth weekend, it added $31.5 million domestically, bringing its worldwide total to $1.1 billion. This marks Nolan’s first film to reach this milestone since “The Dark Knight Rises” in 2012, surpassing both “The Dark Knight Rises” ($1.08 billion) and 2009’s “The Dark Knight” ($1 billion). Although close, Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” ($975 million) fell short of the billion-dollar achievement.

Part of the success of “The Odyssey” comes from its performance in IMAX theaters, earning $147.3 million domestically. It now ranks as IMAX’s highest-grossing domestic release. The film still awaits its release in China. Collectively, films like “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” and “The Odyssey,” have significantly contributed to Hollywood’s best box-office year post-pandemic. Box office sales are 18.5% higher than the previous year, according to Rentrak. Five billion-dollar movies have been released, surpassing any year since 2019. The other high achievers were “Michael” and “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.” Predictions by Rentrak suggest summer theatrical revenue will surpass $4 billion on Monday, marking the first summer milestone since 2023, driven by hits like “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer.” As of Sunday, the summer revenue stands at $14.8 million short of $4 billion.

Meanwhile, a couple of comedies provided variety against the blockbusters but had minimal impact. “One Night Only,” directed by Will Gluck, opened with $5.7 million, despite lukewarm reviews at 46% on Rotten Tomatoes, though audience scores were more favorable. The film, featuring Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner, was produced on a budget of about $25 million. “Super Troopers 3” from Fox Searchlight, the third installment from Broken Lizard comedy troupe, debuted with $4 million.

On a smaller scale, limited releases achieved remarkable screen averages. A24’s “Tony,” portraying a young Anthony Bourdain and starring Dominic Sessa, grossed $348,955, achieving $58,159 per theater. Meanwhile, Mubi’s “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma,” directed by Jane Schoenbrun, averaged $50,300 across five screens.
