CNN Defends Reporting Amid Sourcing Dispute
CNN defended its reporting on the Iran war after retired Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt questioned the network’s use of anonymous sources. The challenge arose during a Saturday interview. CNN affirmed its stance in a statement to Fox News Digital, saying, “We stand by our reporting.”
Joseph Holstead, public affairs adviser to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, chose not to comment on CNN’s report or Kimmitt’s evaluation. He did agree with Fox News’s view that CNN’s sources lacked direct knowledge of the described conversations. Holstead stated to Fox, “We are not going to comment on it nor the opinion of a commentator.”
Brig. Gen. Kimmitt criticized CNN’s reliance on unnamed sources regarding the Iran war. He raised concerns about the accuracy of the network’s reports. CNN did not answer questions about how it verified these sources or addressed Kimmitt’s claims of inaccuracies.
During an interview, CNN anchor Omar Jimenez mentioned a network report in which Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine was said to seek an “off-ramp” to avoid further escalation. Kimmitt responded by noting previous claims that negotiations were not taking place proved incorrect. By that time, President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance had confirmed negotiations.
The issue of negotiations arose when Trump publicly confirmed his involvement. Vance also stated American officials were discussing restoring oil and gas traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. RNC spokesperson Natalie Baldassarre supported Trump’s Iran policy, describing it as effective.
CNN reported that the chairman believed airpower alone would not meet objectives and that escalations involved risks. The network cited multiple sources for this assertion.
Caine’s spokesperson, Joseph Holstead, countered these claims and declined to disclose private discussions. Holstead emphasized, “We do not discuss the Chairman’s confidential conversations…nor do we comment on anonymous characterizations by sources not privy to them.”
Kimmitt highlighted ongoing challenges for the U.S. in dealing with Iran’s nuclear and missile programs, as well as regional proxies. Despite acknowledging these challenges, he noted the need to consider other global threats.
Jimenez remarked that CNN also preferred sources to be named. He expressed a desire for more officials to speak openly.
The sourcing dispute happened as the Trump administration aimed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. According to Fox, U.S. Central Command stopped attacks after multiple days of strikes amid negotiations with Tehran.
