Roland Orzabal Shares Insight into Marriage and Loss

Roland Orzabal of Tears for Fears has opened up about the challenging final years of his marriage in his new memoir, Welcome to Your Life. Orzabal’s first wife, Caroline, passed away following a prolonged battle with an alcohol-related condition. During a recent interview with Fox News Digital, Orzabal shared his journey through love, loss, and finding a path forward.

Orzabal expressed the importance of honesty in his writing. He felt that others might relate to his experiences. “It’s the truth,” Orzabal stated. He believed that authenticity in sharing his story could resonate with someone facing similar challenges.

The musician met his future wife, Emily Rath, in 2016 while touring in Colorado. Despite already being married, Orzabal experienced an immediate connection with Rath, describing a strong sense that she was meant to be in his life. He acknowledged that their bond grew before Caroline’s death.

Orzabal met Caroline Johnston at age 14, and they married in 1982 in Bath, England. They had two sons together. Caroline’s health deteriorated over time, leading to significant strain on their relationship. Orzabal admitted that his rock star lifestyle contributed to the challenges they faced. Despite efforts to repair their marriage, difficulties persisted.

In the late 2000s, Caroline’s health worsened as nightly drinking became routine. Symptoms attributed to menopause masked the underlying issues. Doctors identified alcohol as a contributing factor, though Orzabal struggled to accept this due to his own drinking habits.

After Caroline’s death in 2017 at age 54, Orzabal described experiencing both disbelief and an obligation to support their sons. He sought treatment for his own Ambien addiction in 2019, which helped him find forgiveness within himself.

Orzabal emphasized the weight of grief and its impact on his emotions. He reflected on the importance of respecting Caroline’s memory while acknowledging the severity of her struggles. His book avoids certain details out of respect for her and their family.

In 2020, Orzabal married Rath, and the couple welcomed a daughter, Eula, in 2025. Orzabal credits Rath for offering him vital support throughout his journey. He expressed belief that Caroline would have understood his choice to pursue a new path after her passing.
