New York City’s crime policies are under scrutiny following the tragic death of 12-year-old Jacob Freytes, who was killed by a stray bullet in the Bronx. His mother, Migdalia Martinez, and sister, Angelica Coriano, have publicly spoken out. They have demanded justice and criticized the suspect’s extensive arrest record. Martinez highlights a concerning atmosphere where career criminals feel safer than ever.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, a North Dakota mother, Kailey Erhart, 22, faces serious accusations after a violent attack on her children. Police described the scene as ‘horrific,’ leaving even seasoned officers shaken. Erhart is accused of fatally stabbing her 5-month-old and 3-year-old children, while her 1-year-old survived but sustained severe injuries.
“A scene like that is something that nobody should ever have to see, and the way [the officers] came through in one of the most horrific times that they’ll probably experience in their life, I’m proud,” said Mandan Police Chief Jason Ziegler in a press conference.
Officials responded to a call that Erhart was threatening suicide, which led them to the tragic scene. Earlier, Erhart had reportedly brandished a gun at her estranged husband. Fortunately, he managed to disarm her and dismantle the weapon. Despite his efforts, a physical altercation ensued where she bit and scratched him. The children’s grandmother witnessed the incident, noting that Erhart chased family members out with a knife before the alleged murders occurred.
Erhart now faces nine charges, including two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. Additionally, she faces multiple counts of aggravated assault and terrorizing. Her cash bond is set at $3 million due to ‘the extreme violence in these alleged charges and the threat to the community, victims, and children.’
A GoFundMe initiative has been launched to support the surviving child and father, raising over $25,000. The father’s mother has expressed the immense grief and struggle they face daily, as they cope with the loss of two children and support the child who survived. The family’s ordeal serves as a stark reminder of the lingering impact of violence on individuals and communities.
