Texas Senate Candidate Talarico Sparks Controversy with Faith-Inspired Actions

Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico stirred a debate after a past interview resurfaced in which he discussed his church’s actions. His church faced backlash for sheltering a family of illegal immigrants at risk of deportation by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Talarico, a state representative and a Presbyterian seminarian, humorously remarked, “Christianity is just another word for causing trouble.” He is challenging Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton for a crucial Senate seat.

In a June 2023 interview on Texas Impact’s “Weekly Witness” show, Talarico credited his faith with inspiring his political journey. When asked how his beliefs shape his politics, he cited his church’s activism. He stated, “Justice is just love out in public.” His church gained attention in the 90s for supporting LGBTQ rights and later for allowing an atheist to join.

Talarico’s involvement in progressive causes extended to teaching public school students in San Antonio, establishing an education nonprofit, and pursuing political office. He also addressed what he called “Christo-fascism,” criticizing the religious right for imposing a “certain type of Christianity” on society.

Specific examples given by Talarico included a law requiring public schools to display the Ten Commandments and replacing guidance counselors with chaplains. He also highlighted Texas laws banning child sex-change surgeries and the state’s abortion ban, which he attributed to the “Christo-fascism” movement.

The resurfaced interview drew criticism from Republicans. Republican National Committee spokesman Zach Kraft described Talarico as “dangerous,” accusing him of supporting illegal immigration by opposing border security, police funding, and prison systems.

In response, JT Ennis, Talarico’s spokesperson, countered these attacks, emphasizing Talarico’s commitment to Christianity’s genuine teachings. Ennis stated that Talarico supports border security and law enforcement, highlighting his votes to increase law enforcement funding and deport violent criminals.

Despite Republican criticism, Talarico leads Paxton in recent polls. Republican opponents claim Talarico’s progressive views could harm his campaign. Madison Cercy, a spokesperson for Paxton, criticized Talarico’s beliefs, interpreting them as extreme and opposing Texas values.

Paxton, who recently faced a primary runoff, expressed confidence in his campaign’s ability to challenge Talarico effectively before the election.
