New Vision for Historic Skokie Theatre

The Skokie Theatre, now known as The Skokie, has new owners: Jose Pablo Cantillo and Kristi Cantillo, along with Chris Matsakis and Monica Matsakis. This group of arts professionals aims to revitalize the historic venue at 7924 N. Lincoln Ave., which has been a theater since 1912.

Chris Matsakis stated, ‘We share a love of live entertainment.’ He emphasized their interest in teaching and engaging with the community, offering various opportunities to participate both as audience members and performers. The new owners plan a diverse range of events including comedy, theater, storytelling, improv, music, and jazz. They also aim to upgrade equipment for feature films, hoping to host film festivals and live podcasts.

The ownership transition occurred on June 29, following the purchase from Wendy Kaplan. Plans are in place to reopen the theater in late 2026. The theater recently benefited from a $50,000 grant through the Village of Skokie’s Storefront Enhancement Program and exceeded a $25,000 fundraising target on Indiegogo, raising $30,365. There are plans to reopen the campaign to gather more funds for film equipment and a new large-format screen.

Each owner brings unique skills to the project. Jose Pablo Cantillo has extensive experience in acting, production, and writing, with credits in popular shows like ‘The Walking Dead’ and films such as ‘Elysium’ and ‘Chappie.’ Kristi Cantillo has a background in arts education, curating ceramics programs in Los Angeles high schools. Chris Matsakis, an entrepreneur, found his passion for comedy in a city class and performed in Chicago while building an e-commerce company over 20 years. Monica Matsakis is a storyteller and educator, known for her performances and teaching at the Laughing Academy in Glenview.

The team plans to bring a variety of entertainment to The Skokie, with Jose Pablo Cantillo leveraging his Hollywood connections for unique shows, including one-person and stand-up comedy events. Patrons may become founding members, gaining benefits like opening night tickets.

Jose Pablo Cantillo noted a trend: younger audiences are seeking live experiences. He considers returning to live performances as their own children leave for college, signaling a new chapter. Planned renovations include updating décor, refreshing the lobby, and adding a bar and lounge. Chris Matsakis highlighted that The Skokie’s programming diversity will meet audience desires.

The performance calendar is still to be announced, but storytelling events are already in the works.
