Evaluating the Use of CT Scanners in Airport Security

The use of computed tomography (CT) scanners at airport security checkpoints has raised questions about its effectiveness and appropriateness. These scanners offer the ability to identify threat items, including those older X-ray machines might miss. However, relying solely on this technology for all passenger carry-on bags is being questioned.

CT scanners create a three-dimensional view of a bag’s contents. This contrasts with the two-dimensional images produced by older X-ray machines. The three-dimensional capability means passengers no longer need to remove items from their bags during the scanning process.

The Transportation Security Administration’s initiative to implement CT scanning equipment across all airport security checkpoints is underway.
